Q: I have to urinate at least three times at night which is very disturbing. Recently my PSA reading went up but the doctor has confirmed that there were no cancerous cells detected. Please advise.
A: You may be suffering from prostate enlargement. This is a condition whereby the prostate gland enlarges gradually, eventually causing severe obstruction of urinary flow.
Prostate enlargement is often caused by a change in hormone levels. Excessive amounts of one form of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) can cause the prostate cells to multiply at abnormally high rates.
For mild cases, instead of immediate treatment, the doctor will usually suggest regular checkups to watch for early problems. Treatment is only recommended when the problems become bothersome or present a health risk to the patient.
Saw palmetto is widely used for prostate enlargement treatment in Europe, New Zealand, France and Germany. Since the early 1980s, saw palmetto has been shown to stop or reduce the difficulties associated with an enlarged prostate.
In 2001, University of Chicago researchers studied the effects of saw palmetto extract versus a placebo on 85 men aged 45 and above. Patients supplemented with saw palmetto experienced significant improvements and reduction of symptoms such as frequent urination during day and night and interruption in urination.
A formulation, which contains saw palmetto and pumpkin seeds, was demonstrated to reduce the difficulties in frequency of urination and dribbling. It was found that the prostatic tissue of patients treated with pumpkin seeds showed an impressive decline in DHT levels.
The mineral zinc is also recommended in Europe and the United States as a treatment for prostate disease. Zinc is one of the essential nutrients for proper development of the reproductive organs.
Making some changes in your lifestyle can often help to control the symptoms of enlarged prostate and prevent the condition from worsening.
Caffeine and alcohol should be avoided especially in the evenings. These beverages increase urine production, which can irritate the bladder and aggravate the symptoms. Exercise regularly. Avoid drinking too much fluid before bedtime.
